Forward Deployed Engineer: Who I Am and How I Build
I'm a forward deployed engineer and platform architect who builds SaaS systems that work. Not just in demos or staging environments, but in production where real users depend on them. My approach is simple: embed with teams, understand the actual problems, then architect solutions that solve them elegantly. No over-engineering. No buzzword-driven decisions. Just systems that perform.
Most engineers work in isolation from the problems they're solving. Forward deployed engineers work differently - we're embedded where the problems happen. When TestDino needed a platform that could handle millions of test executions, I didn't build from an ivory tower. I worked alongside QA teams, understood their workflows, and designed architecture that fit their reality. The result? A system that processes 2M+ test executions with 99.95%+ uptime across 80+ organizations. Not because we over-engineered it, but because we understood the problem deeply.
I believe in using the right tool for the job, not the newest tool for the resume: Backend & APIs: Go for event ingestion and the realtime analytics plane, Node.js and TypeScript with Express for tenant, billing and integration services, Python and FastAPI for ML Databases: PostgreSQL and TimescaleDB for the test-event stream and analytics, MongoDB for the configuration services, Redis Streams for realtime fan-out - each chosen for a specific job Infrastructure: Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform - cloud-native but pragmatic AI-Native Development: Claude Code and Cursor daily, with project-specific skills, commands, hooks and memory. I delegate implementation and keep architecture, security review and communication manual
Good platform architecture isn't about using every new technology. It's about building systems that:
  • Scale without breaking - Handle growth gracefully, not dramatically
  • Cost what they should - Efficient resource usage, smart caching, optimized queries
  • Ship reliably - CI/CD pipelines that work, monitoring that matters, rollbacks that save you
  • Evolve cleanly - Modular design that adapts to changing requirements
I've learned this through building systems that serve real users with real deadlines and real budgets.
Everyone talks about AI replacing developers. I use AI to become a better developer. My AI workflow:
  • Code generation for boilerplate and repetitive patterns
  • Architecture discussions with AI to explore trade-offs
  • Documentation assistance for complex systems
  • Debugging support for unfamiliar codebases
The key is knowing when to trust AI and when to trust experience. AI accelerates good judgment; it doesn't replace it.
This blog documents my journey as a forward deployed engineer building platform architecture in the real world:
  • Technical deep-dives into SaaS backend systems
  • Platform engineering lessons from production environments
  • AI-assisted development workflows that actually work
  • Architecture decisions and their real-world consequences
  • DevOps practices that scale teams, not just systems
No theoretical frameworks. No perfect solutions. Just honest insights from someone who ships code that matters.
Building platforms is collaborative work. Whether you're solving similar problems, exploring forward deployed engineering, or just want to discuss platform architecture over coffee, I'd love to connect. Find me on LinkedIn, GitHub, or email me directly. Ready to build something that scales? Let's talk.
